Welders met asbestos from three directions at once. The steel they welded was often wrapped in asbestos insulation that had to be stripped back from the joint. The heat protection around them, blankets, curtains, gloves, and pads, was made with asbestos precisely because it would not burn. And the places that employed welders at scale, shipyards, steel mills, and powerhouses, were saturated with asbestos dust from every other trade’s work. The National Cancer Institute identifies asbestos exposure as the primary cause of mesothelioma, typically appearing 20 to 50 years after exposure (NCI asbestos fact sheet).
The welder’s own materials
Asbestos rode inside the trade’s standard equipment for decades. Welding blankets and curtains shed fibers as they aged and charred. Asbestos gloves and sleeves protected hands and arms from sparks. Pads and boards backed up hot joints. Some electrode and rod products historically contained asbestos in coatings as well. This gear was handled constantly, draped over the work, dragged across decks and floors, and beaten clean, and worn asbestos textiles release fibers readily. The gear was communal in many shops, passed from shift to shift, which spread its wear and its fibers across whole crews.
Exposure from the work around the weld
Before a welder could cut or weld an insulated pipe or vessel, the lagging had to come off. Sometimes an insulator did it; often the welder did it himself, dry and fast. Torch-cutting through material with asbestos residue put dust straight into the plume rising past the welder’s face. Grinding out old welds on insulated vessels threw the residue farther still. And in the compartments and mechanical rooms where hot work happened, welders stood beside insulators, boilermakers, and pipefitters generating dust of their own. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry notes that no safe level of asbestos exposure has been established (ATSDR).
Where Pennsylvania welders worked
This state hired welders wherever steel met steam. The Delaware River yards, including Sun Shipbuilding in Chester, employed thousands of production welders in confined hulls. The steel industry, from the Bethlehem Steel plants to the Monongahela Valley works, used welders in fabrication and around-the-clock maintenance. Refineries, powerhouses, and construction sites round out the usual work histories, and fabrication shops fill in the rest: a certified welder rarely stayed in one building for a whole career, and each shop had its own blankets, its own gaskets, its own dust. Dust on the leathers, dust in the house
A welder’s jacket, cap, and gloves collected dust from every surface he leaned on. The National Cancer Institute notes that fibers carried home on work clothing created risk for family members too (NCI). If the welder in your family is gone, that take-home path may still matter to a spouse’s or child’s diagnosis.
What this means for your family
A welder’s claim is assembled from employers, job sites, and the products in use there: the insulation stripped from the work, the asbestos textiles worn on the job, the gaskets and packing in the shops. Manufacturers of those products are the usual defendants, and many funded asbestos bankruptcy trusts, reported by the U.S. Government Accountability Office at roughly $30 billion in total assets (GAO-11-819). Pennsylvania generally allows two years from discovery of the disease to file under 42 Pa. C.S. § 5524, which is why the work history should be recorded while memories are fresh. If the welder in your family has died, wrongful death and survival actions under 42 Pa. C.S. §§ 8301-8302 generally give the family two years from the date of death.
