The W.R. Grace asbestos trust pays claims to people who developed mesothelioma or another asbestos-related disease after exposure to Grace products, including Zonolite attic insulation and Monokote fireproofing. Grace filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the early 2000s. After a lengthy reorganization, a trust was established to handle asbestos personal injury claims. Grace exposure appears in a wide range of work histories and in many home renovation histories as well.

W.R. Grace and Libby Vermiculite: The Source of Asbestos Contamination

W.R. Grace was a large specialty chemicals and building materials company. Its asbestos history centers on vermiculite mined at Libby, Montana. The Libby deposit was contaminated with asbestos, and products made from it carried that contamination into homes and job sites nationwide.

Vermiculite itself is not asbestos, which is one reason the danger went unrecognized for so long. The contamination traveled inside a product marketed as ordinary insulation. The best-known example is Zonolite, a loose-fill attic insulation installed in many American homes. Grace also sold Monokote, a spray-applied fireproofing used on structural steel in commercial buildings, and earlier formulations of Monokote contained asbestos.

Who Was Exposed to W.R. Grace Asbestos Products

Grace exposure reaches well beyond the traditional industrial trades. The groups most often linked to its products include:

  • Workers who handled or installed Zonolite insulation, and homeowners who disturbed it during renovations or repairs
  • Fireproofing applicators who sprayed Monokote, along with other trades working nearby, while it was applied or scraped back
  • Workers at vermiculite expansion plants that received and processed Libby ore
  • Family members exposed to dust carried home on work clothes

In Pennsylvania, this can include construction workers on commercial projects, insulation installers, and residents of older homes with vermiculite in the attic. If a specific job site is part of the history, our index of Pennsylvania asbestos exposure sites may help place it.

W.R. Grace Bankruptcy and the Asbestos Personal Injury Trust

Facing a growing number of asbestos lawsuits, Grace filed for Chapter 11 protection in the early 2000s. The case lasted for years before a reorganization plan took effect, and a trust was then established to review and pay asbestos personal injury claims in accordance with written procedures.

As with other asbestos bankruptcies, the trust allows the company to continue operating while injured people file claims against a dedicated, funded trust. The trust remains active today for diagnoses being made now.

Families should know that Grace’s reorganization also created separate programs for property damage, including one tied to Zonolite attic insulation. Those programs address removal and property issues. Injury and wrongful death claims go to the personal injury trust.

W.R. Grace Trust Claim Requirements for Mesothelioma

A Grace trust claim generally rests on three elements:

  • A documented diagnosis of an asbestos-related disease
  • Evidence connecting the person to a qualifying Grace product or facility
  • A claimant with standing, either the diagnosed person or the estate after a death

Because Zonolite was installed in home attics, Grace is one of the trusts where residential exposure can support a claim, even when there is little or no occupational history. The trust still expects credible evidence of exposure, so careful documentation matters.

Mesothelioma often develops decades after exposure, so contact with Zonolite or Monokote years ago can line up with a diagnosis today. Claims can also be filed after a death, with the estate stepping into the person’s place. The trust reviews claims administratively, based on records rather than in a courtroom. Payment amounts are set by the trust’s current procedures, so we do not quote figures. Our trust payouts page explains how payments are calculated and delivered.

How a Grace Trust Claim Fits Into a Pennsylvania Mesothelioma Case

A Grace claim is usually one part of a larger case. Many mesothelioma cases combine several trust claims with a lawsuit against still-solvent companies. These filings should be coordinated so that the information remains consistent, as trust submissions can be discoverable in litigation.

Pennsylvania’s Fair Share Act (42 Pa. C.S. § 7102) addresses how responsibility is divided among the companies involved. Our asbestos trust funds overview explains the full system, and the Pittsburgh Corning trust page covers another trust that appears in many of the same construction and industrial histories.

Mesothelioma Without an Industrial Work History: Why Grace Matters

Grace matters because its products reached places many other asbestos products did not: home attics, office towers, and job sites far from any mill or shipyard. If a mesothelioma diagnosis has been made and the work history does not appear industrial, do not assume there is no case. Grace is often the trust that shows otherwise. Our screening covers both home and construction exposures, and the firm handles that work for you.
