Boilermakers worked at the center of one of the heaviest asbestos environments in American industry. A boiler is a high-heat vessel, and for decades nearly everything wrapped around one contained asbestos: block insulation, refractory cement, gaskets, rope packing, and sprayed coatings. Building a boiler meant installing those materials; repairing one meant tearing them out. The National Cancer Institute identifies asbestos exposure as the primary cause of mesothelioma, with the disease typically appearing 20 to 50 years later (NCI asbestos fact sheet).
What a boilermaker actually did with asbestos
The trade’s core tasks put asbestos in hand and in the air. New construction meant fitting gaskets between flanged sections, packing valve stems, and working alongside insulators who cut and mudded asbestos lagging onto the finished vessel. Repair and retube work was worse. Before a crew could cut into a boiler, the old insulation had to come off, and old asbestos lagging does not come off cleanly. It breaks, crumbles, and dusts. Boilermakers then climbed inside the firebox and drum, confined spaces where dust from refractory linings and leftover lagging had nowhere to go except into the air the crew was breathing.
The tools of the trade spread the dust further. Grinding a baked-on gasket off a flange face, cutting rope packing to length, and mixing refractory cement from dry bags each produced fibers at close range. A boilermaker’s hands were in asbestos even on days when no insulation came down, because the sealing materials inside the boiler itself carried it.
Why the spaces made it worse
Dose depends on concentration, and concentration depends on the room. A boilermaker’s rooms were the worst kind: fireboxes, steam drums, breechings, and the boiler decks of ships, all tight, poorly ventilated, and shared with other trades doing dusty work at the same time. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry notes that no safe level of asbestos exposure has been established (ATSDR), and boilermakers routinely worked far above ordinary background conditions. Outage schedules compounded the problem: repairs were compressed into short shutdown windows, which meant more men, more dust, and longer shifts inside the same enclosed steel.
Where Pennsylvania boilermakers worked
Pennsylvania employed this trade at scale for a century. The major settings included:
- Power stations, including the PECO power plants around Philadelphia and the generating stations of western Pennsylvania
- Shipyards on the Delaware, where marine boilermakers built and repaired ship propulsion plants
- Steel mills and their powerhouses in the Monongahela Valley, Bethlehem, Johnstown, and Coatesville
- Refineries at Marcus Hook and industrial plants that ran their own steam systems

Take-home exposure from boiler work
Insulation dust clung to work clothes. The National Cancer Institute notes that fibers carried home on workers’ clothing created risk for household members as well (NCI). Spouses who shook out and washed those clothes, and children who greeted a parent still in work gear, sometimes developed asbestos disease themselves decades later. Boilermakers also traveled between job sites more than most trades, and the dust traveled with them, in cars, union hall lockers, and home laundry rooms.
What this means for your family
Boilermaker cases tend to be well documented. Union records, employer records, and the records of insulation manufacturers often establish which products were on which job sites in which years. Many of the companies that made boiler insulation and gaskets went through bankruptcy and funded compensation trusts; the U.S. Government Accountability Office reported roughly $30 billion set aside across asbestos bankruptcy trusts (GAO-11-819). Trust claims and a Pennsylvania lawsuit can often proceed together. The filing window is limited: Pennsylvania generally allows two years from discovery of the disease under 42 Pa. C.S. § 5524.
